A Promised Joy
Music of hope for tomorrow
featuring Dan Forrest’s Requiem for the Living with Chronos Vocal Ensemble
& Chamber Orchestra
Saturday, November 23, 7:30 PM
West End Christian Reformed Church
10015 149 Street
Jordan Van Biert Conductor
The featured work, American composer Dan Forrest’s moving Requiem for the Living, will be performed by Vocal Alchemy alongside guests Chronos Vocal Ensemble, and featuring a chamber orchestra of local professionals, along with pianist Kim Cousineau.
Guest chamber choir Chronos Vocal Ensemble was founded in 2013 by Jordan Van Biert, and is one of Canada’s premiere non-professional choirs, having won the National Competition for Canadian Amateur Choirs in 2015. This is the seventh annual collaboration between the two ensembles to produce a major work with orchestra; these concerts are a major highlight on the choral calendar each year.
The program will pair the Forrest Requiem with a half-concert of varied music on the theme of hope, unaccompanied and with piano, by composers from Palestrina and Brahms to a variety of Canadian composers. The concert will also feature a newly-commissioned work, Boy with Orange (out of Kosovo), by Toronto composer Alex Eddington. Based on a poem by Lotte Kramer, Boy with Orange highlights both the troubling aftermath of war and the “promised joy” of freedom, and was commissioned by a consortium of Canadian choirs including three Edmonton-based ensembles.
This evening with Vocal Alchemy and guests promises a musical experience that will energize and satisfy the heart and soul.
